Tolmin is the largest settlement in the Zgornje Posočje region and has been the natural centre of the Tolminska region for centuries. A walk through the town takes you through history, into the time of the patriarchs of Aquileia, the Tolmin counts and peasant rebels, the maelstrom of the 1st World War and the soška fronta frontline.

  • The Coronini mansion – The Tolmin museum: A former mansion built in the second half of the 17th century houses the Tolmin museum, which holds a rich cultural heritage of the Posočje region and manages various outside collections.
  • The castle tulip tree: The tulip tree (Liriodendrum tulipifera) at Brajda is supposedly the last remaining tree of the former castle park. It is around 300 years old and one of the largest of its kind in Slovenia
  • The Kozlov rob castle: The fortified castle at Kozlov rob was one of the most important fortifications in the Primorska region North of Gorica and it controlled roads in this region from the 12th to the 17th century. The castle ruins served as an outpost for the Austro-Hungarian army on the soška fronta frontline during the 1st World War.
  • The Tolmin peasant uprising monument: The monument dedicated to the Great Tolmin peasant uprising was developed by painter Tone Kralj. It was erected in 1973 at the 260th anniversary of this peasant uprising, presented in detail in the Tolmin museum.
  • The fountain at the old town square: The mayor Andrej Prezelj had it built in 1862. After the 1st World War it was removed. In 1995 a reconstruction of the fountain was made: what remains of the original are the stone vase and the inscription plaque.
  • The parish church of Virgin Mary’s assumption: It was built in the second half of the 17th century on the spot where a smaller pilgrim’s church of St. Mary on Ilovica used to stand. The only thing that remains of this church is a statue of the Virgin with the baby from 1480. Three baroque marble altars are also worth seeing.
  • The St. Urh cemetery church: is one of the oldest churches in the Tolminska region, the locals used to bury their dead here already in the 9th or 10th century. The presbytery is adorned with late gothic paintings.
  • The German ossuary: is located near the Soča and Tolminka confluence; it holds the remains of 965 German soldiers who lost their lives in the vicinity of Tolmin in the 12th battle on the river Soča in 1917. It is a remarkable architectural monument.
  • The Soča and Tolminka confluence: is a popular gathering place for the young, a popular strolling location for the locals and visitors, a site for festivals, creative workshops and many other activities.

The unspoiled nature of the Tolminska region hides many interesting artefacts of extreme natural beauty in its green shelter. Gorges, waterfalls, springs, ravines, streams and rivers, the richness of the forests, the diversity of the geomorphologic phenomena, the cultural landscape and other witnesses to the natural processes in the past and present call to discovery and exploration. No one can resist the river Soča and its unique emerald colour: it brings guests from all over the world into the arms of the Posočje region mountains and plains.

  • The Tolminska korita gorge: the gorges of the Tolminka and Zadlaščica rivers, the Southernmost entrance into the Triglav national park, its lowest point with 180 metres; the Hudičev most (The Devil’s bridge) 60 metres high above the Tolminka gorge; a thermal spring; the ‘bear’s’ head, an interesting boulder wedged between two cliffs forming a natural bridge.
  • Zadlaška or Dantejeva jama cave: according to local tradition the Italian poet Dante Alighieri was staying here in the beginning of the 14th century; the wild nature and the cliffs of the Tolminska korita gorge supposedly influenced a few verses from Hell of the Divine Comedy.
  • The river Tolminka springs: Karstic springs over the Polog mountain pasture (690m); the river then heads into a deep and narrow gorge, creating beautiful rapids and pools.
  • The Sopotnica waterfalls: sixteen waterfalls, from 2 to 12 metres high, in the Sopotnica stream ravine between the Mrzli vrh peak (1359m) and Grmuč (1196m) on only 200 metres of altitude difference.
