Bela KrajinaThe varied natural and cultural heritage of Bela krajina, the region on the sunny side of the mythical Gorjanci mountain range, will surprise you. The name of the region stems from the colour of the slender birch trees and white flaxen clothes once worn by the locals. Almost 600 km2 of karstic plain is embraced by Slovenia's warmest river Kolpa in the south. Its inviting waters provide swimming and boat rides, and its banks offer scenic hikes. In 2010 Kolpa was awarded the prestigious title European Destination of Excellence.
